I messed with the Negroni for Negroni Week

This seemed like a good idea...

Blanc Slate Negroni Riff

A lighter, floral Negroni riff with gin, Campari, Lillet Blanc, and elderflower liqueur, created for Negroni Week.

Negroni Week is here, which seemed like a perfectly reasonable excuse to start messing with a cocktail that was doing just fine without my assistance.

The classic Negroni is beautifully simple: gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. I wanted to keep enough of that structure that you'd still recognize where the drink came from, while taking it somewhere lighter and more floral.

The result is Blanc Slate.

Why I Tried This

I started by asking people on Threads a deceptively simple question: How far can you riff on a Negroni before it stops being a Negroni?

There were opinions...

The discussion got me thinking about Lillet Blanc and elderflower liqueur, both of which were already sitting on the bar. A little experimentation later, I had my Negroni Week drink.

Did you try this recipe?

Just a quick note: it takes time and a not-insigificant amount of treasure to keep this little venture afloat. Please consider a small donation to the cause. Thank you!

How It Turned Out

Sweetness: There's a noticeable sweet hit at the beginning, but Campari catches up quickly and keeps it under control.

Balance: The London Dry gin gives the drink enough backbone for the lighter Lillet Blanc and elderflower. Campari remains unmistakable without dominating everything else.

Mouth Feel: Lighter than a traditional Negroni, particularly without the richer sweet vermouth, but still substantial enough to feel like a proper stirred cocktail.

Notes & Fine Tuning

I tried several other directions before landing here. Some were decent. One was introduced directly to the kitchen sink.

The important discovery was that I didn't need to pile on ingredients. Gin, Campari, Lillet Blanc, and just 1/4 ounce of elderflower gave me what I wanted.

Even better, I built the whole thing directly in the glass. Four ingredients, ice, stir, orange peel. Done.

Your shaker gets the night off. Your call.

Cheers!
