The Calvados Daisy Cocktail

An apple brandy riff on the classic Daisy cocktail.

Why I Tried This

During a recent livestream, Steve the Bartender challenged his Patreon viewers to create their own Daisy cocktail.

If you're unfamiliar with the Daisy, it's an old family of cocktails generally built around a base spirit, citrus and something sweet. That leaves quite a bit of room for interpretation, which, naturally, sounded like an invitation to start pulling bottles off the shelf.

My first decision was to leave the bourbon alone for once, so I reached for Calvados instead. From there, B&B seemed like a natural partner: brandy blended with Bénédictine, bringing some honeyed sweetness, herbs and spice without completely burying the apple.

Fresh lemon provided the sour component, while grenadine brought sweetness and just enough fruit to round everything out.

And then something unusual happened.

I liked it. Pretty much immediately.

Did you try this recipe?

Just a quick note: it takes time and a not-insigificant amount of treasure to keep this little venture afloat. Please consider a small donation to the cause. Thank you!

How It Turned Out

Sweetness: The grenadine and B&B give it enough sweetness to balance the lemon, but this definitely isn't a sugary drink.

Balance: Lemon hits first, followed by the apple and brandy. B&B hangs around underneath with honeyed, herbal and lightly spiced notes.

Mouth Feel: Light and refreshing rather than rich. Crushed ice adds dilution as you drink, gradually softening the tart lemon and opening up the Calvados and B&B.

Notes & Fine Tuning

Originally, I considered topping the drink with soda, as you'll find in some versions of a Daisy. I tried it without, and didn't think it needed it.

I also considered a lemon garnish but quickly abandoned that idea. There's already plenty of lemon in the drink. An apple peel reinforces the Calvados instead and gives you a little apple aroma before the first sip.

I posted the finished drink for Steve's challenge, and now I'm posting it here because this wasn't merely an experiment that worked.

It's one I actually want to drink again.

I've done my part. Go grab a shaker.

Cheers!
