This seemed like a good idea: Lamar's Libation

This seemed like a good idea...

I made a new cocktail:

Lamar's Libation

Inspired by my dad's occasional Jack and Coke.

Why I Tried This

Father's Day had me thinking about my dad, who occasionally enjoyed a Jack and Coke. That got me wondering what would happen if I tried to build those familiar flavors without actually using any cola.

The result is Lamar's Libation: bourbon, demerara syrup, bitters, citrus oils, and a touch of vanilla working together to recreate the caramel, spice, and vanilla notes people associate with a bourbon and Coke. It's not a copy. It's more like a tribute: familiar enough to spark the memory, but interesting enough that I'd happily order it on its own.

Did you try this recipe?

Just a quick note: it takes time and a not-insigificant amount of treasure to keep this little venture afloat. Please consider a small donation to the cause. Thank you!

How It Turned Out

Sweetness

Moderately sweet, but nowhere near soda territory. The demerara syrup provides caramel notes rather than outright sugar rush.

Balance

The bitters, citrus oils, and vanilla work together surprisingly well. You get hints of cola without anything tasting artificial or forced.

Mouth Feel

Rich and silky, especially when stirred properly over plenty of ice. It drinks like an Old Fashioned that wandered into bourbon-and-cola territory.

Notes & Fine Tuning

  • Prefer a drier version? Reduce the demerara syrup slightly.
  • A higher-proof bourbon pushes the spice notes forward and makes the cola illusion even more convincing.
  • Expressing the orange peel is not optional. The citrus oils do a surprising amount of heavy lifting here.

Flavor Expectation

Expect bourbon first, followed by caramel, vanilla, baking spice, and orange oils. Somewhere in the middle your brain starts filling in the blanks and saying, "Wait... this tastes familiar."

Worth repeating? I’ll let you decide.

Cheers!
