This seemed like a good idea: The Rhinestone Wrangler

This seemed like a good idea...

The Rhinestone Wrangler

A twist on the Rhinestone Cowboy with bourbon, peach liqueur, chocolate mint, lemon, Angostura, and ginger beer.

Why I Tried This

The Rhinestone Cowboy has been popping up lately, and bourbon, peach, lemon, mint, and spicy ginger beer sounded like a pretty damn good summer combo. There was just one minor complication: the only fresh mint I had handy was chocolate mint. It's still very much mint, but it has a slightly darker, earthier, chocolatier character underneath.

So I substituted it and made the drink. It was delicious, but the chocolate mint was subtle, so I added one dash of Angostura bitters.

Well, hello there.

Did you try this recipe?

Just a quick note: it takes time and a not-insigificant amount of treasure to keep this little venture afloat. Please consider a small donation to the cause. Thank you!

How It Turned Out

Sweetness: Peach liqueur and ginger beer provide plenty of sweetness, while fresh lemon keeps everything bright and balanced.

Balance: The bourbon still anchors the drink, with peach showing up clearly without turning the whole thing into peach soda. Ginger brings some welcome spice at the finish.

Mouth Feel: Light, cold, bubbly, and extremely easy to drink, which, as usual, should probably be considered a warning rather than a feature.

The biggest surprise was the Angostura. One dash adds some warm spice, but more importantly, it makes the chocolate mint pop. The mint went from a pleasant background note to a distinct part of the drink.

Notes & Fine Tuning

Could you make this with regular mint? Absolutely. At that point, though, you're getting awfully close to the original Rhinestone Cowboy.

The chocolate mint gives it a small twist, and that single dash of Angostura turned out to be exactly what it needed to make the substitution worthwhile.

I briefly considered tinkering with it further, but then I remembered that sometimes the correct number of additional ingredients is zero.

Worth repeating? I’ll let you decide.

Cheers!
