This seemed like a good idea: The Second Bloom

This seemed like a good idea...

I made a new cocktail:

The Second Bloom

A limoncello-forward Fancy Free variation that quietly transforms as it rests in the glass.

Why I Tried This

One of my favorite parts of experimenting with cocktails is when something unexpected happens.

Second Bloom started as a simple Fancy Free variation with limoncello swapped in for the maraschino. However, after letting the drink rest for just a few minutes, the limoncello slowly "blooms," becoming brighter and more expressive without overwhelming the bourbon. It's subtle, but it's one of the more fascinating transformations I've seen in a stirred cocktail.

If you're the type who usually takes that first sip immediately after stirring, this is the one drink where I'd recommend waiting just a few minutes. Your patience will be rewarded.

Did you try this recipe?

Just a quick note: it takes time and a not-insigificant amount of treasure to keep this little venture afloat. Please consider a small donation to the cause. Thank you!

How It Turned Out

As mentioned, the Second Bloom actually gets brighter after sitting in the glass for a few minutes. The citrus slowly opens up, the flavors knit together, and the whole drink becomes something different than it was on the first sip.

Notes & Fine Tuning

  • Dial back on the limoncello for a more bourbon-forward sip, but be prepared to lose some of the citrusy brightness
  • Angostura is fine if you don't have cardamom bitters.
  • The defining characteristic is time. It is essential to give this one a few minutes in the glass before sipping.

Worth repeating? I’ll let you decide.

Cheers!
