This Seemed Like a Good Idea: The Tandy Tonic

This seemed like a good idea...

I made a new cocktail:

The Tandy Tonic

A gin and tonic… but with tequila and a little heat.

Why I Tried This

This was a special request from a new friend who liked "gin, something a little sweet, and it needs to be 'tonic-y.'" She also liked tequila and spicy peppers. So rather than create two drinks, I decided to throw it all together and see what happened.

Did you try this recipe?

How It Turned Out

What happened was good. My wife, who dislikes both gin and tequila, took a sip and requested one for herself. We both had seconds. That's saying something.

  • Sweetness: Low. Just enough agave to keep the lime from getting sharp.
  • Balance: Crisp and bright from the gin, grounded by tequila, with tonic keeping it light and bitter.
  • Mouthfeel: Effervescent, refreshing, and gone faster than expected.

Notes & Fine Tuning

  • More spice: Add an extra jalapeño slice or let it sit in the shaker 10–15 seconds longer
  • Less spice: Skip muddling and just shake with one slice
  • Brighter: Swap to grapefruit tonic or add a grapefruit peel expression
  • Drier: Reduce agave slightly
  • Rounder: Add 2 drops saline

Worth making again? Yes - and not just for Tandy.

Cheers!
