Bourbony.co - Craft Cocktails and More

In addition to craft cocktail recipes, I post the occasional note on behind-the-scenes shenanigans (like the time I tried fat-washing bourbon... that didn't end well), whiskey reviews (my review of Old Fourth Bottled-in-Bond gets a lot of traffic!), and whatever happens to be on my mind at the moment (hint: it's usually about bourbon...) The Black Oak Old Fashioned

Yeah, it's St. Patrick's Day - How About an Old Fashioned?

Hi Reader! Yeah, I know - it's St. Patrick's Day and all you've heard about for a week or so are cocktails with Irish whiskey and what-not. I'm offering an alternative that I came up with on a whim last night: The Black Oak Old Fashioned. This one came together because I wanted a cocktail with bourbon and coffee liqueur, but without the usual amaro that often gets thrown into the mix. Challenge accepted. I wanted something that felt both classic and fresh, rich but not too sweet, and still...

The Chocolate Chili Old Fashioned

Chocolate, Chili, Bourbon... What's Not to Like?

Hi Reader! I recently noticed an upward trend in my Google Analytics -- people were searching for "ancho reyes old fashioned" and finding the delicious Chocolate Chili Old Fashioned recipe I posted in 2022 when I first started Bourbony. ¡Dios mío, qué delicioso! It's always been one of my favorites, either to make at home, or when we visit Garden City, NY and eat at the Tocolo Cantina, where I first discovered this spicy chocolate take on the classic Old Fashioned. If you haven't tried it,...

The (Fancy) Free Association

A bitter tale to tell... one that's hard to swallow

It's a bitter tale, my friends... Necessity, as it is often said, is the mother of invention. In this particular case, I really wanted to mix up a Fancy Free, but had run out of Angostura bitters and Luxardo Maraschino, and forgot to pick up Angostura at the liquor store when I went to get the Maraschino. (Make that shopping list, boys and girls...) As it turned out, the liquor store was out of Luxardo, but they had Lazzaroni Maraschino, which, if the Internet is to be believed, is less funky...

The Busted Pipe Cocktail

"Damp January was..."

How was your "Dry January?" Happy February Eve, drinkers! It's been pretty quiet at Bourbony Central because I called myself participating in "Damp January," which is a version of "Dry January" that isn't quite so dry. The goal I set for myself was to only imbibe on weekends. Weeknights were for NA cocktails or just coffee. I psyched myself up for this Herculean task by purchasing some NA "bourbon" and a bottle of The Pathfinder, which is a hemp-based NA spirit with a quirky cool label, a...

The Christmas Pear Cocktail

What I'm NOT drinking this Christmas... and what I AM drinking!

Are you sick of egg nog? This is a bit of a misleading question, because I, personally, love eggnog. I'll probably be having some between now and whenever the eggnog runs out. What I'm not drinking are the same holiday cocktails that everyone loves to post around this time of year. You know the ones -- super-sweet, with candy canes and whatnot in them. I wanted something a little different, yet still holiday-esque. Holiday-adjacent, if you will. And then we got a gift box of pears from a...

I've Been a Little Busy...

Season's Greetings! It's been a hot minute (really, it's been about three months, but who's counting?) since I last sent out an email, but things have been a little busy around here. First, my wife had major surgery (everything went well and she's fine, thank you!), then we moved almost everything in the house, including the bar, into storage while we renovated. We had the kitchen completely gutted and reimagined into a bright, modern workspace (my wife loves to cook and now has a brand-new...

The Chocolate Chili Old Fashioned

How About a Little Spice for Your Weekend?

The Chocolate Chili Old Fashioned - A Refresher It's bourbon, it's spicy, it's chocolately... what's not to like?! We just got home from another trip to Long Island, and while we weren't able to visit our two favorite hotel-adjacent restaurants, I thought it'd be nice to revisit the Old Fashioned variant from one of those restaurants, Tocolo Cantina. The Chocolate Chili Old Fashioned was one of the first recipes I posted on Bourbony, and it's still one of the most popular. I'm 99% certain...

What I Really Think About 13th Colony’s Southern Straight Bourbon Whiskey

What I Really Think About 13th Colony’s Southern Straight Bourbon Whiskey Have you tried this stuff?! Hello, fellow cocktail enthusiasts! I realize it's been a hot minute since I sent an email, but it's been a little hectic around the Bourbony bar the last couple of months and time has been at a premium. Annnnd since this isn't my full-time job (although I'm willing to make it so if someone's willing to pay me...), other priorities have taken precedence. So About This Bourbon... I just posted...
